Her Best Fiend
So, a friend has been lying about Alex then telling her friends not to say anything. So much for best friends. Alex has gone to bed tonight wanting to get this day over with. I can feel her sadness even though she’s at her dad’s tonight. It’s like her light has been dimmed by this friend who isn’t a friend and by the lies coming from someone she thought she could trust.
And her friends are so important to her. She needs to trust them. She still has other friends she feels she can trust, but I know she’s hurting. I’m hurting.
I never had friends like Alex has so I don’t really know what she’s going through. I just know how much she wraps her emotions around them and how strong her need for them can be. She’s been through so much; her friends are the light in her life. When one of them betrays her like this – and it is betrayal – she feels vulnerable, and she’s reminded of how fragile her happiness is.
As a mum I could cheerfully set light to the face of anyone who upsets my girl to this extent, but I’m not a violent person. It may blow over. Alex says it will. It seems that she’s protecting my feelings more than she’s allowing me to protect hers.
But she’s a strong kid, a strong personality, and people respect her. They know her to be principled and loyal. They know when someone’s telling lies about her. So, this ex-best friend can carry on making the rope to hang herself with and Alex will keep her dignity and she will continue to deserve the respect that people have for her. The initial desire to dunk this girl’s face in a vat of boiling oil has passed and hopefully Alex is a little stronger and wiser.
