Eve-Teasing

'Eve-Teasing' must be the most ridiculous and useless label given to such disgusting and indecent crimes against women and girls.

When I think of the word tease, I usually think of playful banter between people who like and/or trust each other; I usually think of a smirky comment from a partner aimed at raising a smile.  I sometimes think of children or colleagues having a poke at someone and perhaps causing a certain amount of stress.

What I don't think of when I read the word 'tease' is a woman being doorstepped by a man or a group of men and then having to suffer being fondled or injured.  I certainly wouldn't expect when I read the word 'tease' that it relates to a woman being beaten because she's stood up for herself when suffering such a crime.

It seems on a level with saying a person has been hit when they have been beaten to a pulp.  It doesn't exactly state the case, does it?

Example, two men 'eve-teasing' three women walking to college to take an exam.  One of the girls shouts in protest against their behaviour.  The two men drive away and then come back and slashes one of the girls across the back for standing up to them.  Another example, two sisters walking home from school and the elder sister shouts out when two men drive up alongside them.  In response, the men grab the youngest sister and she is dragged under the car and driven over.  She suffers a fractured leg and fractured vertebrae.  The two men are charged with 'eve-teasing' and are then bailed.  A woman is sat on a bus and men surround her, touching her clothes, her hair, her face.  They are 'eve-teasing' (it's only a tease, isn't it?)  However, she is terrified.

If we're going to have names for sexual crimes against women then we should at least label them appropriately.

Eve-Abusing, Eve-Molesting, Eve-Assaulting, Attempted Eve-Murder.  Whatever.

Teasing just doesn't cover it.
